The Beginning of the Great Depression
One of the most historical events took focalise from 1929 thru the 1930s. It took place in one city, but it affected the self-coloured country of America. This well known episode is described as the first era of The Great Depression. The one situation that sparked this disorganised event was the study stock market crash that occurred on October 29, 1929. (Rothbard &Newton, Intro) During this time Herbert Hoover was president and the American socialisation was spiraling out of control. Massive bank failures occurred more than and more each year causing almost everyone to fall into major debt. People soon lost many of their loved items, such as their homes. Those who were forced to the streets either lived in areas known as Hoovervilles or some were even lucky enough to be taken in by their neighbors. (Norton, Page 711)
Another thing needed to survive was a job. One of the most familiar jobs during that year was construction. However, with construction down $2 billion since 1926 it is no wonder so many lost their jobs. The unemployment rate travel to 25%, and others were taking major cuts in pay or were demoted to part-time. With the payroll cuts and deducted hours the gross national product fell by almost 50 %.
