If iodine were to look at some characteristics of postmodernist architecture, or scarcely postmodernism in general, a common grammatical constituent would be the element of rejection - by rejection, I mean, the rejection of the very mindset which modernist thinkers, or in this case, modernist architects employed and/or attempted to express.
In the case of postmodern architecture, it is the rejection of the conventionalist, sterile, linear, pretentious elements present in modernist architecture. Postmodern architecture is characterized by elements of wit and ornamentation a general breaking of the rules implement by modernist architecture, if you will.
Functionality and formalized elements present in modernist architecture were replaced by diverse ornamentation and structures with inherent aesthetic and symbolic qualities by the latter day postmodernist architects such as Kiso Kurokawa.




Deconstructivist architecture such as that Jacques Derrida en Peter Eisenman also feature many of the abovementioned characteristics although combined with the rejection of postmodernism as well as modernism.
I will investigate the Pompidou building in terms of the abovementioned rejection of formal building styles and its divers(a) symbolic characteristics, in order to farm that it is indeed, an expression of postmodern, as opposed to deconstructivist architecture.

In order to properly classify or pigeonhole a style of architecture, (the run of classification being a rather modernistic approach, if I may …) one needs to understand the differences between the various categories into which said building may fall.
