NATO North Atlantic treaty boldness
It is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collective defense force whereby its member states agree to correlative defence in response to an attack by each external party. NATO has three core tasks:
collective defence,
crisis management and
concerted security by means of partnerships.
The Alliance is committed to protecting its members through political and military
means. It promotes democratic values and is dedicated to the peaceful resolution
of disputes. If diplomatical efforts fail, it has the military capability needed to
undertake collective defence and crisis-management trading operations alone or in
cooperation with partner countries and international organizations.
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan
is shortly NATOs main priority. There, NATOs core role is to tending the
Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in exercising and extending its
liberty across the country while helping create a stable and secure environment
in which reconstruction and development poop take place.
In addition, NATO has four other ongoing missions and operations:
NATO has been leading a peace-support operation in Kosovo since June 1999.
The Alliances ships patrol the Mediterranean, monitoring shipping to deter
terrorist activity.
