He later graduated from advanced school, was opposed to college and took a job for the Kansas Star, where he wrote about the practice of law and Train stations and the insanity revolving around the inside of the near-by hospital. It was his front job that later became the foundation for his book, For Whom the Bell Tolls. The Kansas Star altogether lasted a few months, followed by a deployment in WWI as an ambulance driver. Not a very exciting job for Earnest, to govern the least. In 1918, he was tired, lonely and wanting more than what he had.
